Kai appears in episode 18, "Clothes that Embrace the Mountain." He leaves home to become an artist - he achieves success quickly. However, because of this, he neglects his family until it is too late to return to them. And selling off the mushi-infested coat his sister made for him, well... that was a decision he would come to regret.
